Decline and death are not popular topics in our community, but they’re much better conversations to have when you’re in good health than later. There are many different family types in our area, some more, some less conventional. What I love about drafting Wills, Powers of Attorneys and Enduring Guardian documents is that it’s about people trying to meet their responsibilities and providing for the people and causes they care about in an increasingly complex world; it’s finding ways to balance the needs of children of a first relationship with a second or third partner or of providing for an adult child with a disability; it’s important discussions about all of us ensuring that we’re protected if we lose the ability to manage our own affairs whether as a result of age or accident. I’m all for people doing their own legal work when they can but the Will kit you pick up at the newsagency can save you a few hundred dollars and cost your beneficiaries thousands.
